Access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities is undeniably a fundamental human right. However, according to UNICEF, the situation in Gaza paints a distressing reality, as merely one in ten people currently enjoy direct access to safe water. This critical circumstance has left approximately 1.8 million people in dire need of humanitarian Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) assistance, with children constituting a significant proportion.

The WF-AID’s Ali Asghar Water Appeal has been an invaluable lifeline for the people of Northern Gaza, providing essential support in their struggle against water scarcity. Through this initiative, numerous water projects have been implemented, creating sustainable solutions to address the pressing water crisis in the region.

Access to clean and safe water has significantly improved, positively impacting the health and well-being of countless families. Additionally, these projects have had a particular focus on vulnerable groups, such as children, ensuring that they are shielded from the risks of waterborne diseases. However, the work is far from over, and there is still a long way to go in ensuring that every individual in Gaza has access to this basic human necessity.

Located in the North of Gaza, Beit Lahia faces critical challenges due to insufficient infrastructure and limited assistance from local authorities. The scarcity of accessible clean and drinkable water is a pressing concern for its residents, as a staggering 97% of the water in Gaza is unfit for consumption. This dire situation is compounded by poverty, low-income levels, and limited resources, resulting in water scarcity that poses a severe threat to the health of the population, especially children. The use of unsafe water sources has led to a rise in preventable waterborne diseases, including cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid, and polio. Immediate action and support are vital to address this urgent humanitarian issue and safeguard the well-being of the community in Beit Lahia.

In our ongoing efforts to address this critical issue, this year, Ali Asghar Water Appeal’s Flagship Project focuses on the resilient people of Gaza. We have collaborated with our dedicated ground partners to provide a water truck and 200 water tanks to 200 families in Beit Lahia. This vital initiative follows the success of our previous water trucks and water tanks in northern Gaza, serving as a lifeline for the entire region. By completing this project, we will ensure that 1,400 beneficiaries have access to clean drinking water on a daily basis, ultimately supplying the entire northern region of the Gaza Strip.
